At the time Christ was being scourged…
at the time He was being lifted up on the Cross…
at the time He was dying for man…
a question stands silently:
Where were the angels?
Were they absent?
Or were they unable to intervene?
The answer from the Holy Scriptures and the Fathers is
shocking.
Christ had said that if He wanted, He would call upon
“twelve legions of angels.”
That is, the entire heaven would descend in an
instant.
So the angels were not absent.
They were there.
But… they did not move.
They stood.
They watched.
They were silent.
They did not do it out of weakness.
But out of obedience to the will of God.
The angels saw their Creator being humiliated…
insulted… crucified by His own creatures.
And they did not intervene.
Because at that time a battle of power was not being
played out… but the greatest Mystery of love was being revealed.
If the angels came down, the Cross would stop.
And if the Cross stopped… man would not be saved.
That is why heaven fell silent.
But creation spoke: the sun darkened, the earth shook,
the curtain was torn.
And the angels?
They stood in awe.
In pain.
In holy silence.
And they waited…
Until the moment when the silence became a cry of
victory: “He is not here… He is risen!”
My brothers, Christ did not come down from the Cross
because He wanted to take us to Heaven.
And the angels did not save Him from the pain…
because at that time we were being saved.
And if at that time the angels were silent…
it was because Love spoke.
The angels did not hold Him on the Cross…
His love for you held Him.
Every nail and an “I love you”.
Every drop of blood and a salvation.
And when He said “It is finished”, it was not His end…
it was the beginning of your own life.
So do not just ask where the angels were…
Ask
yourself:
You… where are you in the face of such love?
